Hmm, at what age does girlhood end? Because this can't be womanhood.
Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be grown. I wanted to be in charge of my life and have freedoms I just didn't have at the very "I'm not a kid anymore" age of 13. When I was 16, I just knew once I turned 21, I was going to be "there"; I was finally going to be a young, hot ebony with bankroll living in my deluxe loft in the sky!
To nobody over the age of 27's surprise, that is NOT what happened. Life was not a breeze, and I was not married and in love by 25. Babe, there wasn't even any money, lmao. I went through so much in my early 20s, which I classify as "girlhood" years, the founding years that really shape you (like when you're 24, and you're with that really terrible person you think is going to be your forever, and then... right). It's like each year in your early to mid 20s is you graduating a new level of girlhood.
And then one day, you're 29, and there's just this sudden shift. You don't really even notice it at first, it's like you don't care about the same things you did when you were 26, but you're not quite sure what replaced them either. You're not necessarily "healed" or "thriving" or whatever the caption would say, but maybe you're not 100% settled in your life either... you're just... different. Less patient with foolishness. More tired in a new way. And then boom, you're leaving your house, getting in your car, heading to your big girl job, and it just hits you out of nowhere... Hmm, wait, is THIS, Womanhood?
I created Is This, Womanhood? on a random day when I realized omg, I'm not a kid anymore (mind you, I was 29, lol), and now I've expanded it. Whether you're just stepping out of girlhood into womanhood, kind of unsure about what this next chapter is going to look like but you're finally ready to treat yourself like the grown woman you always pictured at 12, or you're already deep in it (35+), having decided somewhere along the way that you still want both whimsy and the finer things. This community is where you can experience both.
Is THIS, Womanhood? is a lifestyle brand, mail club, and community for Black women 28+, structured around self-care, whimsy, and enjoying life's luxuries as we transition out of girlhood and settle into womanhood.
